How to Open docx Files Without Microsoft Office 2007 or Higher

A docx file extension is a Microsoft Office Open XML Document file that Microsoft introduced with its Office Suite with Microsoft Office 2007. Any Microsoft Office Suite prior to this version can not open the docx file until you have Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack installed, something about which we will talk later. In this article I am sharing with you some of the easiest ways to open docx files without installing Microsoft Office 2007 or higher.

How To Open docx Files ?

There are many ways you could open a docx file. I arranged them in order I would apply them.

Try opening the file

Chances are may be you would be having some third-party software that could open docx files. So first try to double-click the file and let Windows decide which program can open it. If no compatible program is found then probably there’s no application installed on your machine that could open docx files.

Install Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack

If you have an earlier version of Microsoft Word installed then you can download the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack that will allow you to open, edit and save docx file in the old version of Microsoft Word itself.

Download Other Applications

There are many other applications that allow you to open docx files. Two of the most popular and free are the OpenOffice Writer and AbiWord. There are many other applications but I like these two.
