Auto HD for YouTube is a Chrome extension that forces YouTube to automatically run videos in HD mode whenever available. You can specify the resolution from 720p or 1080p and it will automatically run HD videos in the specified resolution. Moreover if HD resolutions are not available then it will select the highest possible resolution for your videos. You can even specify to widen the video player which will increase the width of the video player to give you a better viewing experience. UPDATE The extension now gives you the option to choose any resolution from 240p, 360p, 480p, 720p or 1080p. Whichever you select will be used by default for all YouTube videos.NOTE
